I was surprised that Shoko said she liked the personalities of Americans more than Japanese. She said Americans are very positive and always laughing. My experience of Japan was that the people there are nicer than America. One day my friend Devon and I were walking around town trying to figure out how to get to a place on a map. We stopped inside a car dealership and they let us use their internet, tried to help us as best they could speaking only Japanese, and even bought us soda from the vending machine. I heard several similar stories from the other American councilors. When coming back to the states is when I really noticed. Landing at an airport in San Fransisco I immediately noticed that the airport staff were all frowning, would speak harshly and generally appeared unhappy compared to the airport staff when leaving Japan. The same was true of the store venders and other people at the airport. So it was interesting that we have different perspectives about this.
